A major police operation at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre in Auckland ended tragically on Thursday afternoon after an armed man fleeing police was shot dead while carrying a long-barrelled air rifle.
The incident began at approximately 2 p.m. on August 13, 2026, when police received information about the alleged theft of an air rifle from Gun City in Penrose. According to Auckland City District Police Commander Superintendent Sunny Patel, the offender fled from the area in a vehicle, prompting police units and the Eagle helicopter to begin tracking the vehicle.
Police Eagle located a white Suzuki Swift near Sylvia Park and monitored the vehicle as it travelled toward the Pakuranga area. The vehicle entered the car park at Pakuranga Plaza before quickly leaving and travelling along the Pakuranga Highway toward Panmure.
Police said the vehicle was being driven erratically. Officers subsequently deployed road spikes as the vehicle continued toward Panmure and the Mount Wellington Highway.
The vehicle eventually became stranded at an intersection outside Sylvia Park Shopping Centre. At approximately 2:50 p.m., the man reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot while carrying the long-barrelled air rifle.
He then ran onto the grounds of Sylvia Park and headed toward an entrance to the shopping centre, with police officers pursuing him.
According to Superintendent Patel, officers confronted the man underneath an overpass at the shopping centre while he was still in possession of the air rifle. Police then shot him.
First aid was immediately provided at the scene, but the man was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Police have established a critical incident investigation into the shooting. Authorities said the investigation is still in its early stages and officers are working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the fatal police shooting.
The incident unfolded in one of Auckland’s busiest shopping areas during the afternoon, when shoppers, retail workers and commuters were present at Sylvia Park.
Witnesses described hearing several gunshots. One witness told 1News that they saw a man being pursued by armed police before hearing three shots. Another witness inside the mall said shoppers were instructed to move upstairs after gunshots were heard outside.
Emergency services, including Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John, attended the scene as police established a cordon around the area.
The shopping centre was also placed into lockdown as a precaution during the incident. Kiwi Property, which manages Sylvia Park, confirmed that part of the centre had been locked down while police dealt with the situation.
The lockdown was later lifted after police confirmed that there was no ongoing risk to public safety. However, a police presence remained in the area while investigators continued their work, and members of the public were asked to avoid the scene.
The incident also caused disruption to transport around the shopping centre. Auckland Transport reported detours and diversions affecting several bus routes because of the emergency services operation.
For shoppers and employees who were inside Sylvia Park during the incident, the afternoon became a frightening and unexpected emergency. The presence of an armed person, police pursuit and gunfire in or near a busy shopping complex created understandable concern among people in the area.
Authorities have stressed that there is no continuing threat to the public. The focus has now shifted toward establishing exactly what happened during the confrontation and determining the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.
