The Gaffney, South Carolina, community is mourning the tragic death of Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr., a 17-year-old Gaffney High School student who was fatally shot Wednesday morning while preparing to board a school bus.

According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office and the Gaffney Police Department, the shooting happened around 6:49 a.m. on August 12, 2026, in the 500 block of West Rutledge Avenue. Fair had reportedly walked from his apartment across the street toward the bus stop when a male approached him. After a brief altercation, Fair was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. 

The incident occurred as students were beginning another school day. Fair was reportedly in the process of getting onto the bus when the confrontation took place, turning an ordinary morning into a devastating tragedy for his family, classmates and the wider Gaffney community.

Authorities said surveillance footage from the school bus captured the aftermath of the shooting. According to investigators, the shooter fled toward a waiting vehicle that was being driven by another person. The identity of the suspected shooter and the motive behind the confrontation had not been publicly released at the time of reporting.

The shooting was witnessed by 15 students who were on the school bus, according to the coroner. The traumatic incident has understandably raised concerns among families and members of the community, particularly because the victim was a teenager heading to school.

Cherokee County officials have described the killing as an absolute tragedy, while expressing sympathy for Fair’s family and the students who witnessed the violence. The circumstances have also prompted additional law-enforcement measures around local schools.

Gaffney Police Chief Gerald Knight said extra patrols would be stationed at the shooting location and around schools throughout the remainder of the week. Officials have emphasized that, based on the information available, there was no ongoing danger to other schools or students.

The Cherokee County School District is working with law enforcement as the investigation continues. School officials have encouraged families to rely on official communications and avoid spreading unverified information while investigators work to establish the facts.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has also been called in to assist with the investigation. Its Special Victims Unit — Department of Child Fatalities routinely assists with investigations involving the unexpected, suspicious or violent deaths of children under 18.

Police are continuing to gather evidence from the scene and review available surveillance footage. Investigators will also work to identify the person responsible and determine what led to the confrontation before the fatal shooting.

At the time of reporting, authorities had not publicly announced an arrest or released the identity of a suspect. The investigation therefore remains active, and anyone with information is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement.

For Fair’s family, the loss comes at an especially painful time. A 17-year-old life filled with possibilities has been abruptly taken away, leaving relatives and friends to cope with an unimaginable loss.
