The Wolcott, Indiana, community is mourning the sudden death of Kacy J. Cunningham, 43, who was killed Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 18 in Benton County.
According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal collision occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on August 12, 2026, on westbound State Road 18 at County Road 1200 East. The crash happened within an Indiana Department of Transportation construction zone, where traffic was being controlled by a flagger.
Investigators said Cunningham was driving a car and had stopped as directed by an INDOT flagger when her vehicle was struck from behind by a pickup truck.
The pickup was being driven by 39-year-old Jacob A. Morris of Peru, Indiana. The impact caused a serious collision that left Cunningham fatally injured.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Cunningham was pronounced dead at the location of the crash.
A passenger in Cunningham’s vehicle, 40-year-old Nathan P. Christner of Wolcott, was also found unconscious following the collision. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities had not immediately released the extent of his injuries. Morris was evaluated at the scene but reportedly refused medical treatment.
The crash resulted in a significant emergency response along State Road 18. The roadway was closed for more than two hours while investigators documented the scene and worked to reconstruct the circumstances of the collision.
The Indiana State Police crash reconstruction team assisted with the investigation. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what happened as Cunningham’s vehicle was stopped in the construction area.
